Jasper Goodall
Jasper Goodall is an artist/photographer based in East Sussex, UK.
His practice, whilst photographically based, is rooted in the imaginary; using the natural environment as source material, artworks are created either through the use of artificial light, physical intervention or reconstruction of elements to make an image. This alteration transforms real spaces into ‘make believe’ places.
His output, although eclectic, is nevertheless held together by an abiding interest in the natural landscape as a subject. Each work is in some form a construct: whether physical, digital, or altered by lighting, – nature is sampled and re-worked to arrive at a final artwork.

New body of work added to the gallery:
Lemma and Glume - eight wheat weavings
Jasper Goodall’s latest body of work entitled Lemma and Glume is now available to purchase as limited edition prints.
These eight wheat weavings, often referred to as corn dollies, are a mix of traditional designs and new inventions never seen before. The title Lemma and Glume refers to the names for parts of a grasses seed head.
Jasper became interested in corn dollies after completing his series Where once we stood on Scragged Oak Hill as they articulate similar ideas; just as his forest figures were meant as an embodiment of nature, so corn dollies were originally made to house the spirit of the wheat over winter. They were made using the last stalks of the harvest, kept in the home over the winter months, and then ploughed back into the soil when the new crops were planted to return the spirit to the land. The term corn dolly is thought to originate from corn idol.
The weavings are presented in pairs, one light on dark, the other dark on light; a reference to the changing seasons of winter and summer. They are printed on a beautiful Japanese handmade paper called Kitakata Select. This paper is very light at only 90 gsm, however due to its primary fibre – Gampi, it is incredibly strong. It was chosen for its straw-like colouring and its surface – very smooth but with fibrous flecks that give a wonderfully organic feel.
